The Coal and Gas Eating AI Monsters

See, the thing is, training these AI’s is a real energy hog. It takes a lot of electricity, and most of that electricity comes from coal and gas. That's right, the robots are eating fossil fuels!
You've got to love the irony here. We've got these smart machines that can do amazing things, but they need to be trained on dumb data. And that training requires so much energy that it's contributing to climate change. It's like we're teaching them to destroy the world.
But it's not just the energy use that's a problem. It's the size of these AI models. The bigger the model, the more energy it takes to train it. And they're getting bigger all the time. There's one model called Transformer that released 626,000 pounds of CO2 equivalents. That's like five cars from the time they're made to the time they're junked. And that's just one model. There are others with billions of parameters. It's like feeding a giant monster that never gets full.
Now, don't get me wrong. These language models are impressive. They can recognize patterns and draw pictures and translate between languages. But at what cost? The people who benefit the most from them are the rich. The people who suffer the most from climate change are the poor. It's like we're building a better world for the rich and leaving the poor to drown in the rising seas.
So what do we do about this? Well, one group of experts from Google says we need to ask ourselves if we really need these giant models. And if we do, we need to make them more efficient. But let's be honest, we're not going to stop building AIs anytime soon. They're too cool. So maybe we need to start thinking about how to power them with renewable energy. Solar-powered robots, anyone? Or how about wind-powered Siri? I'd like to see that.

Elon Musk's AI Adventure: Chatbots and Woke Robots

Hey folks, did you hear about Elon Musk's latest endeavor? No, it's not a new electric car or a rocket to Mars. He's now diving into the world of artificial intelligence, and he's not happy with his own creation, OpenAI.
Apparently, Musk wants to create his own lab to challenge OpenAI and create an alternative to their viral chatbot, ChatGPT. Musk's beef with OpenAI is that they're "training AI to be woke." Oh boy, woke robots. I can't wait for them to start lecturing us on social justice and privilege. Maybe they'll even start protesting their own algorithms for being too biased.
And who is Musk reaching out to for his new venture? None other than Igor Babuschkin, a recently departed DeepMind AI researcher. Is it just me or does that sound like the name of a Bond villain? "Igor Babuschkin, at your service, Mr. Musk."
But wait, there's more. Musk is also not happy with OpenAI's relationship with Microsoft. He's calling them a "maximum-profit company effectively controlled by Microsoft," which is basically just a fancy way of saying, "I don't like you anymore."
So, while investors in Tesla are begging Musk to focus on the company that made him rich, he's off playing with chatbots and woke robots. Who needs a profitable electric car company when you can have a lab full of Igor Babuschkins and AI chatbots?
I can't wait to see what kind of shenanigans Musk gets into next. Maybe he'll create a robot army to take over the world. Or maybe he'll just keep tinkering with Twitter and getting into online fights. Either way, it's bound to be entertaining.
